The State of California requires that in order to become licensed one must pass criminal background checks by both the DOJ and FBI, have 6,000 hours of compensated experience in investigative work; or a law or police science degree and 4,000 hours of compensated experience in investigative work. Then pass a rigorous examination covering laws and regulations, civil and criminal liability, evidence handling, undercover investigations, and surveillance. *Some skills cannot be taught and are only learned through experience.
